Ohio State hosts workshop on advanced vehicle technology competition, EcoCAR 3
Industry Leaders and 16 national student teams work on creating the next “high speed hybrid”
COLUMBUS, Ohio – EcoCAR 3 will host the Fall Workshop October 21 – 24 at The Ohio State University, involving industry leaders from General Motors and Argonne Laboratories, as well as 16 teams from universities across North America. This is the first time a university has hosted an advanced vehicle technology competition (AVTC) workshop.
Over the four year competition, students will re-engineer a Chevrolet Camaro to the next “high speed hybrid.” The Fall Workshop provides insight into new vehicle technologies, industry-leading tools, as well as networking opportunities with sponsors.
The Ohio State University EcoCAR 2 Team won the overall EcoCAR 2 competition in June 2014. Over the course of three years, the team re-engineered their Chevrolet Malibu into a hybrid running on electricity and ethanol fuel.
“Experiential learning projects like EcoCAR are one of the most valuable experiences for our engineering, business, and communications students,” said Shawn Midlam-Mohler, co-faculty advisor of the Ohio State EcoCAR team and director of Ohio State Motorsports. “These students effectively are creating a high-tech business within Ohio State to research, design and build an advanced technology vehicle. Employers take note of this type of experience and our students’ success in the job market speaks for itself.”
EcoCAR 3 gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in mechanics, electrical systems, computer automated designing, communications and business management. Successful teams utilize the ideas and contributions that stem from students in various majors working together to accomplish a common goal.

About EcoCAR 3
EcoCAR 3 is the latest competition sponsored by the U.S. DOE. 16 North American Universities are being tasked with re-engineering a Chevrolet Camaro, provided by General Motors, into a hybrid-electric vehicle that runs off of alternative fuels. Teams must solve complex engineering challenges and apply new technologies to create a Camaro that has lower emissions and higher fuel economy. Students have four years to accomplish efficiency goals while maintaining the high performance levels that this automotive icon embodies. About The Ohio State University EcoCAR Team
The Ohio State University EcoCAR team is one of sixteen teams competing in the EcoCAR 3 advanced vehicle technology competition. The team is made up of 40 students, ranging from undergraduate freshmen to Ph.D. candidates. Students on the team have a diverse variety of majors, from mechanical and electrical engineering to business and public relations.
